Improvement of the Quality of the Services provided by artisanal fishermen in the province of Talara (Pariñas) through innovations and technical assistance in packaging, packaging and packing systems for hydrobiological products
Background
The project is carried out within the framework of the NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR INNOVATION IN FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE (PNIPA) of the Ministry of Production, where projects are called for whose objective is to design and execute innovative solutions that strengthen the value chain of fishing.
The first link in the fishing value chain rests with artisanal fishers. In the specific case of this project, this refers to the artisanal fishers of the San Pedro Guild, which operates in the province of Talara.
Currently, fishermen deliver their aquatic products without any added value, from the boat to the intermediary, causing neither individually (fishermen) nor collectively (guild) to benefit.
According to the information gathered in the area of interest, the situation is due to several factors, including: the comfort zone to which the fishermen are accustomed (making money as quickly as possible, offering their products as soon as they arrive from the open sea), lack of knowledge about the benefits of adding value to their product, lack of technical training for the handling of tools that facilitate the processing of the product, lack of organization of the guild formed by the artisanal fishermen, among others.
End of project
To improve this situation, the project's main objective is to enhance the quality of services offered by the fishing industry. This objective will be achieved through four key pillars and activities:
- Training for local fishermen, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of adding value to their seafood products, especially squid. This training includes alternatives for adding value through the processing of raw materials.
- Training on internal organizational aspects of the union.
- Development of a pilot line for packaging and labeling. The design will consider innovative aspects related to the energy source, processing, and packaging of the product.
- Technical assistance will be provided to a group of local fishermen to operate a packaging, packing, and labeling line for seafood products. Specifically, this project will focus on the most commonly harvested species in the area: squid.
An important aspect of the project is its aim to integrate women into the economic environment of the fishermen through technical training for the operation of the pilot line. This will not only empower women within their families but also improve their economic situation.
