Morgenstadt Global Smart City Initiative
Description
Smart and sustainable urban development is key to addressing some of the most pressing global challenges, such as mitigating and adapting to climate change and improving resource efficiency. However, approaches to sustainable urban development along sectoral lines have led to a divergent assessment of investment priorities and local needs.
As part of the research project “Morgenstadt Global Smart Cities Initiative: Global Approach – Local Solutions”, the city becomes an experimental space, an urban laboratory, called CityLab. In this context, the Provincial Municipality of Piura and the University of Piura are part of a collaboration with the University of Stuttgart in Germany and the Fraunhofer Society. This project is sponsored by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
The objective is to generate replicable and viable solutions and strategies using advanced technologies in pilot cities that are based on an analysis of local development demand. Local partners are supported through knowledge exchange in the international innovation network Morgenstadt: City Insights and the capacity to address sustainability is strengthened through the development of specific capabilities in pilot cities in India, Mexico and Peru.
Through the implementation of the urban laboratory, the city of Piura will have tools to develop strategies and measures against climate change, in this way; Piura can be established as a model of German-Peruvian cooperation in the design of smart cities and sustainable urban development.
