Hydrological modeling of the flows of the Chira and Piura rivers: Evaluation of the current hydrometeorological network and development of a prediction tool

Description

In the Piura region there are two hydrographic basins that cover most of its territory. The Piura basin does not have a system of dams that allow the regulation of flows, to avoid overflows and flooding. Nor does it have a flow prediction system that helps take timely prevention measures. On the other hand, the Chira River basin has the Poechos reservoir that does allow the regulation of flows, avoiding flooding and the consequent damage in the Middle and Lower Chira valleys. However, this important hydraulic structure is losing capacity due to the accumulation of sediments that enter, especially in rainy years; and by not having a flow prediction system, the floods cannot be used to carry out clearing operations, without neglecting the main uses of the water resource for the rest of the year. Therefore, this project will solve these problems by developing a flow prediction system, based on statistical models fed by rainfall and flow measurements from hydrometeorological stations located throughout the study basins.

The prediction system will be implemented through a computer tool that integrates all the information and generates the corresponding reports and develops statistical models for the short-term prediction (up to 72 hours) of the flood flows of the Chira and Piura rivers based on an exhaustive study of the hydrometeorological network, and develop a computer package to automatically obtain the predictions, which allows them to be presented in a simple application to which interested entities such as the Chira Piura Project, GORE, COER, IRAGER and private users of the region
