Luigi del Re
Ph.D. in Technical Sciences: ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Diplom-Ingenieur (M.Sc.): ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Full Professor at Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, Head of the Institute for Control Systems Design at JKU Linz (since 1998) and Director of the Institute for Design and Control of Mechatronic Systems at the same university. His research areas include nonlinear control, with a particular focus on approximate representations; parameter and structure identification; automotive control; predictive control modeling; and systematic design evaluation. His main research interests are related to engine and vehicle technology, hydraulic systems, process control, and biomedical systems. He is recognized for his leadership at the Institute for Control Systems Design (SCD) at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, Austria. He is a pioneer in the application of nonlinear MPC for the optimization of internal combustion engines, hybrid systems, and electric vehicles. He specializes in modeling complex systems using techniques that combine first principles with machine learning. He has applied control theories to the healthcare field, notably in the development of algorithms for insulin dosing (artificial pancreas) and the analysis of variability in the response of diabetic patients. Dr. del Re has published hundreds of articles in indexed journals (IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, Automatica, etc.) and is the author/editor of key books such as: Model-based Control: Bridging University Research and Industrial Recall; and Identification for Automotive Systems. He has actively collaborated with the University of Piura as a researcher and visiting professor.
Guilherme Vianna Raffo
He holds a PhD in Robotics and Automation from the University of Seville. He teaches Electronic Engineering at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. His research areas include predictive control, electronic process control, automation, stability and control, and software engineering. His articles have been ranked four times among the 25 most interesting articles worldwide on automation by Elsevier – ScienceDirect. He is the author of the book "Control of Mobile Robots for Trajectory Tracking." For several years, he has been a volunteer lecturer at UDEP.
Enrique San Juan
Doctor of Engineering Sciences, specializing in Automation: University of Santiago, Chile. Bachelor of Engineering Sciences: University of Santiago, Chile. Specialization: Digital signal processing, satellite communications, and electronic instrumentation. Expert in filtering and noise reduction techniques. He has published comparative papers on multiresolution analysis (Wavelets) versus classical filters such as Savitzky-Golay and Moving Average, essential for data cleaning in industrial sensors. Application of processing algorithms to biomedical signals (ECG) and audio signals. He works on the integration of optimization algorithms for signal separation, using techniques such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA). He is an active researcher in the field of Visible Light Communications (VLC) and the development of resilient wireless networks for 6G technology, integrating mathematical models to maximize coverage and signal-to-noise ratio. He has recent publications (2020-2025) on research into mathematical formulations for 5G/6G networks, the development of security layers for industrial buses (LIN Bus), and energy management in wind power systems. He is a collaborating professor in postgraduate courses offered by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Piura.
Alireza Pourreza
He holds a PhD in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from the University of California. He is an extension associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering and director of the Digital Agriculture Lab at the University of California, Davis. He leads an innovative research and extension program in digital agriculture, focusing on remote sensing, precision agriculture, and mechanization. His research program is dedicated to addressing the most pressing challenges in agricultural production systems, as identified by stakeholders. His lab specializes in developing practical, data-driven decision support tools that enable farmers to increase profitability and minimize waste and environmental impact.
In addition to his academic and research responsibilities, Dr. Pourreza is a permanent member of the Club of Bologna, a prestigious international working group focused on agricultural mechanization. He is also an associate editor of the journal Computers and Electronics in Agriculture. Research areas: Precision Agriculture/horticulture; Agricultural Mechanization; Remote Sensing and GIS; Machine Vision; Agricultural Robotics and Automation; Big Data; Hyperspectral/Multispectral Imaging.
Marcello Farina
He earned his Master's degree in Electronic Engineering in 2003 and his Ph.D. in Information Engineering in 2007, both from the Polytechnic University of Milan. In 2005, he was a visiting student at the Institute for Systems Theory and Automatic Control in Stuttgart, Germany. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan. His current research interests include state estimation and distributed and decentralized control, as well as the modeling and control of power supply systems. In 2017, he was awarded the Italian FARB (Research-Based Activities Funding) grant. He was Principal Investigator of the BUDD-e project (Blind assistive autonomous Droid Device), which received funding from the Polisocial Award 2021. He collaborates on the 4D Drone Swarms (4DDS) project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Enterprises (Ministero delle Imprese e del Made in Italy).
Paolo Rocco
He received his Bachelor's degree (Laurea cum laude) in Electronic Engineering and his PhD in Computer Science and Automation in 1991 and 1995, respectively, both from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. From spring to autumn 1995, he was a visiting researcher at the School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech (Atlanta, USA), where he worked with Professor Wayne J. Book on the control of flexible manipulators. Dr. Rocco's research interests include industrial robotics, human-robot interaction, redundant manipulators, the use of computer vision in robotics, servomechanism control, and mechatronics in general. He has authored approximately 200 articles in international journals, book chapters, and presentations at both national and international conferences. He serves as an expert for the European Commission and the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research in the evaluation of proposals and ongoing projects. Since 1996, Dr. Rocco has been a member of the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) at the Politecnico di Milano, where he is currently a Full Professor of Systems and Control. From 2013 to 2018, he served as Chair of the Bachelor's and Master's programs in Automation and Control Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. He is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Politecnico di Milano for the 2022-2024 term. Since 2023, he has served as Head of the Systems and Control Research Area at the DEIB. Dr. Rocco was a member of the Board of Directors of MADE, the Industry 4.0 Competence Center based in Milan, where he is currently the scientific lead for technology transfer projects. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of euRobotics (the association of all robotics stakeholders in Europe) and I-RIM (the association for robotics and intelligent machines in Italy). He is also a member of the Advisory Board of EIT Manufacturing's CLC-South. He is a co-founder of Smart Robots, a spin-off company from the Politecnico di Milano.
Carlos Rivera-Carpio
Engineer, inventor, and educator affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley. PhD in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Postgraduate studies in robotics and autonomous systems at Stanford University. His main areas of professional interest are sensing, machine learning, robotics, AI, and sequential decision-making. Research areas include: methods, algorithms, and development of sensing and imaging systems; data-driven modeling methods for scientific, manufacturing, environmental, clinical research, and financial risk applications; computer vision analytics; machine learning for complex dynamic systems; generative AI; embedded AI and robotics algorithms for perception, decision-making, and control; sequential decision-making under uncertainty; reinforcement learning; integration of sensing and physics-based modeling; reverse engineering design and control; and data science and AI for innovation and technology leadership.
Mario Arbulú
Mechanical and Electrical Engineer (University of Piura). PhD in Electrical, Electronic, and Automation Engineering (Summa Cum Laude, European Mention), Robotics, and Automatic Control Systems (Carlos III University, Madrid). He is currently CEO of Service Robotics and Automation Solutions Robotics 4.0, Colombia. He has been a Research Professor at the Corporación Universitaria del Huila (Colombia) and UNAD. At UNAD, he was a full-time lecturer and researcher in Advanced Robotics and Power Electronics. His research project, Intelligent Manipulation of Assistance and Service Robots, is particularly noteworthy.

 

 

National teachers

William Ipanaque
Doctor of Engineering. Research and Development Area: model-based automatic control, process optimization, automation with artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. Manager, formulator, and executor of R&D&I projects, with over 25 years of experience. His projects are geared towards solving industrial problems and developing technology (more than 35 projects in which he has participated). His results are reflected in: invention model patents, software registrations, and contracts with companies for product development. He is also the author of two books in his area of development and a contributor to two others. He has over 75 publications in indexed databases and articles presented at high-level international conferences. As a human capital development professional, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses (Master's and Doctoral levels) as a tenured professor. He has advised doctoral theses (in progress), Master's theses, and Bachelor's theses (more than 90 theses). He is invited to give seminars, courses, and lectures at foreign institutions and at various national and international events. As a result of his leadership, he has promoted the development of new areas of work within his field at his workplace: improvements to agro-industrial processes, projects in the fishing sector, and automatic measurement and control systems. At his institution, he was the founding director of the Department of Electronics and Automation; a Master's degree in Mechanical-Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Automation and Optimization; a Doctorate in Engineering with a specialization in Automation, Control, and Process Optimization; and a Master's degree in Automation with Artificial Intelligence. He has served in public institutions: as a member of the Advisory Council of the Congress of the Republic's Science, Innovation, and Technology Commission; as a member of the Regional Committee (Piura) for Science, Technology, and Innovation; and as Vice President of the Regional Strategic Group (Piura) for Science, Research, and Innovation. He has received numerous national and international awards and distinctions.
José Manrique
PhD in Engineering with a specialization in: Automation, Control, and Process Optimization. Master's degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Energy Systems and Maintenance from the University of Piura. His research interests include: Industrial Automation, Industry 4.0.,
Artificial intelligence, mathematical process modeling (first principles and parametric identification), advanced process control (linear and nonlinear predictive model control), and machine learning; this knowledge has been applied in the following production sectors: fishing (fishmeal production process), agro-industry (mango and banana cooling and preservation process, cocoa fermentation process), and agriculture (pest prediction in banana crops) through the execution of both funded and unfunded research projects. In 2018, he won the Newton Paulet Mobilization Fund competition for an internship in the United Kingdom. In 2023, he won the 2023 Young Researcher Award from the University of Piura. He is currently a professor and researcher at the University of Piura.
Ivan Belupú
PhD in Engineering with a specialization in Automation, Control, and Process Optimization. Systems Analyst and Programmer, Industrial Engineer, Master's in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Automation and Optimization from the University of Piura. He has also completed a research stay at the Polytechnic University of Milan. Researcher in advanced model-based control techniques. Software developer in Java (desktop and web), Python, C#, .NET, and SCADA systems using open-source tools. Research areas: embedded systems, ICT, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and architectures in remote computer systems for monitoring. He provides support as a professor and researcher in digital transformation projects, extension courses, and postgraduate programs at the University of Piura.
Edson Fernandez
Mechanical and Electrical Engineer from Udep. Master of Science in Engineering with a specialization in Electrical Engineering from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland. .
He has worked as a service coordinator at Zorritos Technical Services, a research fellow in the master's program at the Lugano University School of Engineering (Switzerland), a technology and RPA consultant at E&Y, and a service provider for Fondecyt. His research focuses on advanced model-based control techniques. He currently works as a professor and researcher at the Control Systems Laboratory of the University of Piura.
Irene Alvarado
Industrial Engineer and Master in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Automation and Optimization, both from the University of Piura, Peru. PhD candidate in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Automation, Control, and Process Optimization. Postgraduate degree in Control and Automation Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. She has conducted research stays at the Zurich Polytechnic, the University of Valladolid, and the University of Santiago, Chile.
She is currently a professor and researcher at the Control Systems Laboratory of the University of Piura. Her research focuses on the identification, modeling, and advanced model-based control techniques. She led a research project on utilizing organic cocoa waste to generate energy. She has directed several research projects and is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
Italo Chinchay
Master's degree in Telecommunications (University of Santiago, Chile). Industrial Engineer (University of Piura). Cisco Certified Instructor. Winner of an international award for excellence in instructor training. In 2014, he obtained Cisco CCENT certification. Since 2015, he has held the Cisco Expert Level Instructor Excellence designation. He is currently a research professor at the University of Piura and an instructor at the Cisco Academy at UDEP.

Ian Ríos
PhD in Humanities with a specialization in Cultural Studies (PhD Candidate). University of Piura. Master's in Business Administration (MEDEX) from the School of Management (PAD) at the University of Piura. Industrial Engineer from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Currently, he is the Director of the Human Resources Department at PAD, a Consultant at GP Group, and Managing Director at Competencias. He has served as Development Manager at ARIN and as General Manager at Joyeros Artesanos (Bolivia).
Ismael Sánchez
He holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering from Carlos III University of Madrid and a degree in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. He specializes in theoretical and applied statistics. Since September 2015, he has been a Full Professor at the University of Piura, in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Previously, his career was based in Spain, where, among other positions, he was a Professor in the Department of Statistics at Carlos III University of Madrid. His main research interests are time series forecasting, statistical process design and control, and their applications to industry. His most recent collaborations with industry have focused on the development of statistical tools for the prediction, management, monitoring, and integration of renewable energy electricity production; the monitoring and prediction of shrimp growth in fish farms; and the hourly and daily forecasting of water flows. He has published research articles in prestigious JCR journals such as the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Technometrics, Journal of Quality Technology, International Journal of Forecasting, International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, Aquacultural Engineering, among others.
Alex Cuadros
He holds a PhD (2002-2007) and a Master's degree (1999-2001) in Mathematical and Computer Science from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship (2007-2009) researching mesh generation from images at the University of São Paulo. He was a visiting researcher (February-March 2009) in the Department of Radiology, University of Pennsylvania (UPENN), USA. He was also a visiting professor (December 2009-February 2010) at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI) at Utah State University, USA. He has been a research professor at the Catholic University of San Pablo (UCSP) in Arequipa, Peru (since February 2009) and coordinator of the Center for Research and Innovation in Computer Science (since March 2013). He currently serves as Director of the Department of Computer Science at UCSP. Alex is a founding member of the Peruvian Computing Society (SPC). His areas of interest include: Mesh generation from images, Computer Graphics, Computational Geometry, Scientific and Medical Visualization, Volumetric Rendering, Three-Dimensional Reconstruction from Planar Sections, Voronoi Diagrams and Delaunay Triangulations, Generic Data Structures, and Heterogeneous Programming.
Edilberto Vásquez
PhD in Process and Systems Engineering from the University of Valladolid, Spain. Master's degree in Industrial Control Systems from the University of Valladolid, Spain. Industrial Engineer from the University of Piura. Qualified as a RENACYT Researcher. He is an evaluator and formulator of Applied Research projects. His research fields include industrial automation, energy efficiency, renewable energies, structural and equipment integrity assessment, and signal processing. He is currently a research professor and Vice Dean of Graduate Studies and Extension at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Piura.
Justo Oquelis
PhD in Advanced Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Industrial and Mechanical Electrical Engineer from the University of Piura. Experience in the design of electronic and electrical power control systems. Design and implementation of control systems based on PACs, PLCs, industrial communication networks including wireless systems, fieldbuses, and centralized and distributed control equipment, as well as industrial monitoring and control systems. Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Piura, teaching courses in: Electrical Power Systems, Distribution and Utilization Systems, and Electrical Machines. Professor in the Master's Program in Mechanical Electrical Engineering and the Doctoral Program in Automatic Control at the University of Piura. César Chinguel
PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Navarra, Spain. Industrial Engineer from the University of Piura. Experience in University Academic Management and Technology Management under military standards. Participated in Technology Management Consulting projects specializing in Industrial Automation and Intelligent Instrumentation. Research Professor at the University of Piura since 1987 and Director of the Electronics Laboratory in the Faculty of Engineering since 2014.
