WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE COMPETITION

Virginia Tech University's Summer School "Generative AI for High School Innovators" is aimed at high school students from the northeastern region of the country (Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Amazonas, San Martín, and Cajamarca). Interested students should apply individually by following the steps detailed below:

to. Access the registration form via the following link (https://forms.gle/jvwEC4XyruuDAQzV7), and begin the registration process. This registration will be open until June 1st.

b. Write a one-page essay (maximum 800 words) answering any of the three questions:

1. Why does informality remain high in Peru and how does it affect economic growth? What policies could reduce it without hindering productive activity?

2. How do social networks influence young people's consumption decisions, and what effects does this have on the economy? influencers Do they generate real value in the economy?

3. Can Peru benefit from the increased demand for minerals like copper without generating more social conflict? What economic policies would be necessary?

c. Send the essay in PDF format, by June 1, 2026, to the email address maria.villegas.me@udep.edu.pe with the subject: Economics Challenge.

d. An academic jury will select the 10 applicants with the best essays to compete for the full or partial scholarship.

and. Six participants will be selected, who will have access to the following benefits:

● 3 full scholarships (100% of the covered cost of the virtual course at Virginia Tech – UDEP).

● 3 half scholarships (50% of the covered cost of the virtual course at Virginia Tech-UDEP)

PARTICIPANTS

a. The application is individual.

b. Only students in their 4th and 5th year of secondary education, from State Educational Institutions (State Management) and Private Educational Institutions (Non-State Management) in the northeastern region of the country (Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Amazonas, San Martín and Cajamarca), may participate.

c. Each participant may only submit one essay.

d. Participants whose essays have been selected will have, upon request, expert audiovisual advice for recording your video.

e. Ten participants will be selected, who will have access to the following benefits:

• 5 full scholarships (100% of the cost covered for the virtual course in Virginia) Tech-UDEP).

• 5 half scholarships (50% of the covered cost of the virtual course in Virginia) Tech-UDEP).

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

• Duration: Approximately 2 weeks.

• Dates: The program runs from July 7-19, 2025. Confirmation will appear on our Instagram.

• Modality:

The course has two components.

– Synchronous virtual sessions taught in English from 8:00 – 10:00 pm (Eastern Standard Time)
– In-person session: Saturday, July 19 (UDEP – Piura Campus). Morning (time to be confirmed)

CONTENT AND EVALUATION

1. Instructions for writing the video

a. Content

The applicant must write an essay answering one of the three questions:

1. Why does informality remain high in Peru and how does it affect economic growth? What policies could reduce it without hindering productive activity?
2. How do social media influence young people's consumption decisions, and what effects does this have on the economy? Do influencers generate real value in the economy?
3. Can Peru benefit from the increased demand for minerals like copper without generating more social conflict? What economic policies would be necessary?

b. Length: maximum 800 words, written in Word, sent in PDF format and uploaded to the form at the time of registration.

2. Instructions for the video

– The video will explain the topic addressed and its proposal.
– The content and video quality will be evaluated.
– The video must be recorded in vertical format (Instagram style).
– The video quality must not be less than 720p, which corresponds to HD.
– The video length should not exceed two minutes.
– If you use music and images, you must cite the authors to avoid infringing on property rights.
– In the case of citations to third parties, acknowledge the authorship.

The video must be submitted taking into account the following specifications:

• Introduction, presentation, and development, which must include quantitative data and information related to the chosen topic. No additional data may be added to that presented in the essay.
• Explain in a concrete way the appropriate proposals and solutions considering the role of the different actors involved.
• Communicate ideas clearly.
• Good on-camera presence, with appropriate gestures and body language.
• Good visual, sound and editing quality.

3. Evaluation criteria

For the trial:

– The concepts it deals with are organized in such a way that there is a logical connection between them.
– Personal opinions are expressed with a personal analysis of what is being described.
– Use of a broad and correct vocabulary.
– The conclusion is convincing, solid, and gives a clear idea of the position.
– Appropriate writing and structure.

For the video:

– Likes on Instagram for the Academic Program of Economics-Piura (30 %)
– Video quality and originality (20 %)
– Analytical and communication skills (30 %)
– Test rating (20 %)

DELIVERY TIME

The following will be taken into account for delivery times:

a. The deadline for submitting the essay and the video is June 1st at 11:00 PM.
b. The results of Phase I will be published on June 4th
c. The voting period for the videos will be from June 5th to June 8th at 9:00 PM.
d. The results will be announced on June 9th
e. The course for the winners will begin on June 15th
Essays or videos submitted after the closing date and time will be rejected without further processing or right to any claim.

OWNERSHIP AND APPRAISAL

Participants grant the Economics program of the University of Piura, in accordance with the provisions of the Intellectual Property Law, the rights of reproduction, distribution, public communication, and transformation of the content for its use within the framework of the Competition. The University will recognize the moral rights of the participants.

Participating students authorize the use of their image and/or voice, understanding that such use will be for the benefit of the students. To this end, they sign these contest rules, as well as the document entitled “Assignment of Image and/or Voice Rights,” which forms an integral part of these rules. In the case of minors, their parents, guardians, or legal representatives must sign this authorization.

RESULTS AND DATA

The jury will be composed of three professors from the Department of Economics, Piura Campus, of the University of Piura:

a. The jury will select the finalist works.

b. The jury's decision will be final.

c. The jury may not declare the competition void.

DISQUALIFICATION AND PENALTIES

Those who will be automatically disqualified are:

a. Works whose authorship does not belong to them. If they use GPT Chat for improvements of The wording should be mentioned.

b. Failure to comply with the established guidelines, requirements, and deadlines for presentation of the report.

c. Failure to comply with the organization's instructions.

Participants declare that they know and accept these Program Rules from the moment of their registration.

Any eventuality that arises before, during and after the Program, not foreseen in these Rules, will be resolved by the event's organizing committee.
