Ideology

After the first 50 years of life of our University, it was deemed appropriate to work on a new formulation of the ideology. The updated ideology published below was approved by the Superior Council of the University of Piura (ACS 2920/21, December 13, 2021), with the favorable opinion of the Academic Council and the Chancellery. Soon, specific outreach activities will be scheduled for our university community.

Mission 

The University of Piura aims to contribute to the common good and promote the dignity of the human person, through the search for truth, through the development and transmission of knowledge and the comprehensive training of the members of its community, based on a Christian conception of man and the world.

Vision

The University of Piura seeks to be a benchmark of excellence in higher education, through cutting-edge scientific research, innovative pedagogy and the training of people who are distinguished by their professional competence, their leadership for social transformation, their ethical commitment. and his human quality.

I. General principles 

  1. This Ideology exposes the institutional identity and states the fundamental principles of the University of Piura, with the objective of inspiring all its activities and all the people who are part of its university community.
  2. To materialize the founding principles in the life of the institution and its members, the University of Piura seeks to become a living research community, contribute to the common good and promote the dignity of the human person, through scientific research, teaching , cultural dissemination and social responsibility activities, which include outreach and health care. It is proposed to develop a synthesis of culture that harmonizes the specialization of knowledge with the unity of Christian humanism, within the framework of the classic mission of the institution. To achieve this, it is expected that everyone will share and promote, or at least respect, the values, virtues and aspirations expressed in this Ideology.
  3. The University of Piura recognizes Saint Josemaría Escrivá as its Founder, who from the beginning encouraged and guided this project, giving rise to the Association for University Education (ADEU) to promote the creation of the University.
  4. The University of Piura declares its Catholic identity from its founding origin, since then, with the express intention that all its activities are carried out with full fidelity to the faith and morals taught by the teaching of the Catholic Church, be it pontifical, universal conciliar. or the competent organizations of the Holy See, supports an educational and assistance model that understands research and transmission of sciences and humanities, personalized training, as well as tasks of social responsibility, as a service to the full development of the human person and society, integrating them into a transcendent perspective.
  5. The Christian vivification of the University of Piura and the pastoral care of the university community, by agreement between ADEU, the University of Piura and the Peru Region of the Prelature, are entrusted to the Prelature of Opus Dei, ecclesiastical circumscription of the Catholic Church .
  6.  The primary purposes and aspirations of the University of Piura are:
    • Form a community of professors open to truth and dialogue, which, together with their academic and professional excellence, seeks to inspire their research and teaching activities in the founding principles and institutional ideology of the University of Piura.
    • Promote the human and professional development of teachers, directors and administrative and general services staff, so that they can make their indispensable contribution to the university's work and also promote the founding principles and the institutional ideology.
    • Provide comprehensive training and professional preparation to its students, so that they can serve their fellow citizens and promote the common good through their own profession and civic action, with competence, honesty and a spirit of solidarity.
    • Pursue authentic inclusive education, promoting entry to university studies to those who have vocation, talent and enthusiasm, without discriminating based on socioeconomic, ethnic, racial and sexual conditions, or religious, political or any other convictions.
    • Provide its alumni - permanent members of its university community - with a scope for reflection on the challenges of today's world and opportunities for continuous training.
    • Promote and disseminate scientific research with international impact, with special emphasis on the most urgent ethical problems and the promotion of the development of the regional and national community.
    • Carry out extensive university extension work that contributes to the human, ethical and cultural development of people and various social sectors.
    • Live university social responsibility, contributing to society through research, training, assistance work, transfer and advice, alone or in collaboration with other universities and with public organizations and private entities.

II. Values and virtues promoted by the University of Piura

  1. As a university institution, the University of Piura promotes that its area of study and work be a common house of meeting and coexistence, inspired by values and practice of virtues. It proposes to serve society through the search for truth, with an interdisciplinary spirit, intellectual freedom and a work climate that favors dialogue, cultural diversity and respect for each person. At the center of its university mission is the person as the goal of all teaching, research, transfer and social responsibility activities. Its vision Christian humanism leads her to focus on training in virtues with a professional and social sense; virtues such as honesty, friendship, industriousness, perseverance, entrepreneurial spirit, civic commitment, social responsibility and the permanent desire to learn.
  2. Its Christian identity invites the University of Piura to identify with the love that Jesus teaches in the Gospel, expressed in the principle of primacy of charity. From this perspective, it seeks harmony between faith and reason, responding to the specific problems of today's world, with special attention to ethics and bioethics. It understands the dignity of each person according to their transcendent destiny and offers Christian formation activities that nourish the dimension spirituality of people, in a climate of promotion of religious freedom and respect for people of different faiths. It encourages the ability to ask for forgiveness and forgive, knowing how to understand and put oneself in the place of the other. It seeks to generate a culture of encounter and seeks to encourage common reasoning with those who think differently, to establish a fruitful dialogue. It promotes solidarity through volunteering among people in its university community, to help in a special way those who are in situations of need, and promotes social leadership to achieve authentic comprehensive development.

    Promotes the care of the vulnerable, especially the unborn, children and adolescents, the elderly, people with disabilities and migrants.

    It recognizes the intrinsic dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family. Promotes human rights, focused on life, liberty and equality. It especially protects freedom of expression and legitimate pluralism, health, and education in the life of the university community.

    Promotes equal consideration, respect, rights and opportunities between women and men, the family as a natural and fundamental element of society*, an ideal environment for personal growth and a central agent in comprehensive human care, social justice and solidarity as a condition for peace, the inclusion of members of native communities, the protection of the environment as a common home and the search for the common good; and rejects all unfair discrimination.

  3. Saint Josemaría, as the first Grand Chancellor, encouraged the University of Piura to live in the face of the needs of all people and to be an area of exchange and understanding, which forms citizens willing to build a more just society and live a solid commitment to ethical principles in professional work. With the same initial impulse, today Opus Dei advises the University as a work of evangelization, so that the principles of Christian humanism - expressed in the Magisterium of the Catholic Church - inspire scientific research, teaching, cultural dissemination and social responsibility activities and even the way the University is managed. The message that Opus Dei promotes leads to enriching the meaning of life, finding God in daily work, and living to the full. service of others, especially in family and friendship relationships.

III. College life

  1. Academic life must develop in a climate of trust, social friendship and respect for people and their opinions, so that the necessary environment for mutual cooperation and dialogue is created, so that the University of Piura can provide a true service to society.
  2. They are specific principles of academic life:
    • The promotion of research, understood as the ability to strive and commit to the search and service of truth, with scientific rigor and openness to innovation, seeking to show the unity between faith and reason in the various disciplines.
    • A high level of academic quality, which stimulates study and research habits and guarantees the adequate preparation of the student.
    • Interdisciplinarity within each center and in all of them, as parts of an integrated whole to achieve the goals of the university.
    • An attentive sensitivity to the problems that arise in society, to study them with scientific depth, in search of solutions that favor peace, social justice and true well-being, without leading to partisan political action or other tasks unrelated to the purpose. of the University.
  3. For the development of their training project, those who make up the University of Piura – students, teachers, managers, administrative and general services staff – must freely assume the commitment to put into practice the principles and values included in this Ideology, and participate in educational work, above all through the integrity of their conduct and their spirit of cooperation. Due to the special function that corresponds to them, the professors and professionals who make up the University must be distinguished by their competence and uprightness of life, compliance of their duties, loyal collaboration with their colleagues and with the academic authorities and, in general, for their availability to serve the people who are part of the university community. The managers and the administrative and general services staff support from their tasks specific to the educational effort of the entire University, and constitute essential human and professional support for teachers and students to effectively carry out research, teaching and learning activities.
  4. Students have the right to receive a comprehensive education that promotes the various dimensions of personality and the capacity for discernment and judgment on ethical, deontological, technical and human matters. The conduct of students must promote coexistence and respect for the principles of this Ideology and the dignity of other people.
  5. The University of Piura offers all members of the university community the opportunity to freely deepen their knowledge of Catholic doctrine, as well as timely spiritual care. In this way, with the utmost respect for the freedom of conscience of each one, they can acquire a transcendent meaning of their profession and, in general, begin or improve their Christian life.
  6. The exercise of government at the University of Piura is inspired by the principles of authority understood as service, collegiate and participatory work, and the temporality of positions.
