It is a public university located on the north bank of the Rio Grande or Rio Grande, in the city of El Paso (Texas, United States). UTEP has become a national model for successfully creating and executing highly competitive academic and research programs for 21st century students. Additionally, it is chosen as an R1 (very high research activity) university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, one of only 130 (4.5%) among the 2,883 four-year institutions of higher education in the United States.
