 The Program

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the existence of a large shortage of doctors trained in the ventilatory support and monitoring of critically ill patients, both in public and private institutions.

The Postgraduate and Continuing Education Unit of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Piura offers the International Course in Respiratory Pathophysiology in Critically Ill Patients, a program aimed at medical professionals, nurses and physiotherapists who work in critical care areas and who wish to acquire and/or consolidate knowledge in the field of respiratory physiology, which is the basis for providing adequate ventilatory support and monitoring in patients admitted to critical care areas.

Goals

Upon completion of the training process, the graduate is expected to acquire the following competencies:

  • Understanding the fundamentals of gas exchange physiology and the basic principles of advanced respiratory mechanics assessment: esophageal and transpulmonary pressure, respiratory drive, etc.
  • Understand the basic principles of graphical monitoring and mechanical ventilator programming.
  • To assess how hemodynamics are affected by mechanical ventilation.
  • To understand the basic principles of bedside respiratory monitoring tools: Ultrasound and Electrical Impedance Tomography.

Teaching methodology
  • Teaching strategies for blended learning environments: Autonomous learning, collaborative learning and active learning.
  • Teaching and learning activities: synchronous.
  • Resources: Canvas virtual platform for virtual learning environments.

The methods that will be used for the development of the course are:
