Doctors in Italy

At the Faculty of Human Medicine of the University of Piura (UDEP) we believe that the training of a health professional must transcend classrooms and borders.

Therefore, we offer our students this international opportunity, which will allow them to experience the Italian healthcare system firsthand through the Doctors in Italy Fellowship Program. During this experience, they will learn how medical care is provided in different clinical and cultural contexts, understand different approaches to medical practice, and strengthen intercultural skills that are fundamental to their professional development.

The selected students will complete their experience in some of Italy's most prestigious hospitals and clinics, several of which are included in the ranking World's Best Hospitals 2024 of Newsweek.

Through direct observation of the work of doctors and other health professionals, students will be able to better understand the responsibilities, challenges, and daily dynamics of clinical practice.

Furthermore, the stay will foster the establishment of links with renowned professionals, providing opportunities for learning, mentoring and the creation of a valuable international network of contacts that can contribute to their academic and professional development.

• Facilitating the learning of innovative medical practices and techniques, that allow students to expand their knowledge and strengthen their mastery of clinical procedures.
• To enhance clinical reasoning for diagnosis and treatment of pathologies in different health contexts, enriching the experience of students facing complex and challenging medical situations.
• To provide a comprehensive understanding of the organization of and access to care in health systems like Italy's, promoting skills that facilitate performance in international environments.
• Encourage interaction with patients from diverse sociocultural backgrounds, strengthening the capacity for communication and effective relationships in a multicultural context.
• Promoting a global vision of health, reinforcing the humanistic training of students and their ability to provide empathetic and holistic care.

Students of the Professional School of Human Medicine who meet the following requirements:-

• Have a valid enrollment in the 2026-II academic period.
• Be in at least the 4th year of your degree program.
• With a weighted average greater than or equal to 13.

• International training experience in specialized clinical settings, which enriches professional training and broadens the academic and cultural perspective of the participating student.
• Professional and international projectionThe experience allows students to strengthen their academic and professional profile, expanding their intercultural skills, their network of contacts in the international medical field, and their opportunities for future postgraduate programs abroad.
• Official certificate of participation, awarded by the Faculty of Human Medicine of the University of Piura upon completion of the training stay, which supports the academic and clinical experience acquired.

• In person

• Experiences available in various cities in Italy, including Rome, Milan, Florence, Bologna, Naples, Bari and Padua, in addition to other destinations.
• Rotations in four or more medical specialties, allowing a comprehensive view of clinical practice.
• Opportunity to conduct clinical observation in outpatient clinics (ambulatory care) at all participating locations.

• More than 20 hours per week clinical observation (clinical shadowing) together with healthcare professionals.
• The rotation lasts 2 to 4 weeks: From January 4 to 29, 2027 or from February 1 to 26, 2027.

The schedule for carrying out activities will be established by Doctors in Italy according to the tutor's schedule; most are Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., depending on the assigned medical area. This may include morning or afternoon shifts, Monday to Friday.

• The specialist will be designated by the host institution once the student has been admitted. This specialist will be an expert in the medical field chosen by the student.

• Application fee$350 (non-refundable). Only students previously selected by UDEP will be eligible for this opportunity to study in Italy. This payment must be made within 15 days of the announcement of the selected candidates for Doctors in Italy.
• Clinical rotation feeCosts vary depending on the city and the length of the rotation: Prices range from approximately $3,000 to $8,000.
• Doctors in Italy It offers a payment plan.

All payments are made directly to Doctors in Italy according to their established processes.

In addition, accepted students will be responsible for covering their transportation, food, and accommodation expenses in the destination city, as well as purchasing international health insurance. For this process, selected students will follow the procedures of Doctors in Italy.

The application, selection, and acceptance process will take place on the following dates:

• Reception of applications and documentation: until September 11, 2026.
• File evaluation and interviews: until September 18, 2026.
• Publication of the list of students nominated by the WFHSeptember 21, 2026.
• Notification of nominees for Doctors in ItalySeptember 21, 2026.
• Initiation of procedures with Doctors in Italy for the allocation of places in clinical areas: from September 23, 2026.
• Acceptance of the place by the selected candidates: from the day they complete their paperwork with Doctors in Italy.

The receipt of files will be carried out in a virtual until the September 11, 2026, through the online application enabled by the Interinstitutional Relations and Internationalization Unit (UREINI).

The application must include the following mandatory documents:

• APPLICATION FORM Application Form with the applicant student's data
• Cover letter, addressed to the Director of the Professional School of Human Medicine, indicating the student's personal data and a brief explanation of the reasons that led him to apply to the Student Mobility Program.
• Curriculum vitae, undocumented (maximum 2 pages).
• Academic record or certificate that proves the required cumulative index.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring the truthfulness and authenticity of the data and documents submitted.

Applications submitted after the deadline or that do not meet all the required criteria will not be accepted.

The selection process consists of two phases:

• First phase (UDEP):

The Evaluation Committee of the Faculty of Human Medicine reviews the submitted documentation, evaluates the candidates, and conducts personal interviews to understand their motivation, academic background, and expectations regarding the exchange program. Based on this evaluation, the list of students nominated to apply to US-C&I is published.

• Second phase (Italy):

Nominated students will need to complete their clinical rotation request according to the Doctors in Italy process.

Final acceptance is subject to the final evaluation carried out by Doctors in Italy, which reserves the right to admit or not admit applicants.

The accepted student must submit the COMMITMENT TO ACCEPTANCE,which must be duly completed and signed within the established timeframe.

Nominated students must attach the following documents:

• Valid passport.
• Record number of vaccines.
• Other documents that Doctors in Italy will ask for.

These documents are essential for submitting the official nomination to Doctors in Italy and will be presented by the students nominated by UREINI, during the first phase of the process.

Subsequently, once Doctors in Italy confirms acceptance, the submission of additional documents, which include:

• Certificate of English at a conversational level (advanced).
• Background check
• International insurance.
• Proof or complete vaccination card that includes COVID-19.

During the first half of August, there will be a virtual talk by the Doctors in Italy team to explain the program in detail.

On behalf of the University of Piura (UDEP):

Students who leave the Student Mobility Program without justification, after being evaluated and accepted, will be excluded without the possibility of participating in future calls, and may be subject to a penalty, depending on the call.

Offenses during the application process or during the validity of student mobility will be sanctioned in accordance with the Regulations of Disciplinary Measures for students of the University of Piura.
