Each year in Peru, around 15,000 cases of children with burns are registered, with INSN San Borja being the main national reference center for their comprehensive care.
The Specialized Burn Patient Unitor it treats between 300 and 400 hospitalized pediatric patients annually, with a specialized ICU and the application of the Guide for the Approach to the Acute Burn Patient (WHO/PAHO), which has allowed it to achieve a mortality rate of 0%.
The treatment approach is comprehensive and interdisciplinary, incorporating physical and emotional rehabilitation, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, and reconstructive surgery for sequelae.
Rotating students will be able to observe the clinical and surgical management of patients with major burns, learn about modern techniques such as micrografts, hydrosurgery and the use of dermal matrices, and integrate into multidisciplinary teams dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of children, in a highly specialized and humanized environment.
- Understanding the comprehensive medical management of the pediatric burn patient, including initial stabilization, pain control, fluid replacement, and infection prevention.
- Identify the comorbidities and complications associated with extensive burns in the pediatric population.
- To analyze the special needs of the pediatric burn patient, both in the clinical, emotional and social aspects, within a humanized care approach.
- To understand the main physical and functional consequences of burns and to observe the therapeutic and reconstructive strategies used for their comprehensive rehabilitation.
Students of the Professional School of Human Medicine who meet the following requirements:
- Having successfully completed the Surgery I and Surgery II courses.
- Have a cumulative index equal to or greater than 14.
- Have a valid enrollment in the 2025-II academic period.
- Enrich academic and clinical-surgical training through immersion in a highly complex hospital environment, specializing in the comprehensive management of the pediatric burn patient.
- Join a multidisciplinary healthcare team, observing a comprehensive and humanized approach of the patient.
- Strengthen understanding of the care and rehabilitation process of patients with extensive burns.
- Receive a certificate of participation, awarded by the Faculty of Human Medicine of the University of Piura, which accredits the training experience.

The rotation will take place in the Specialized Comprehensive Care Subunit for Burn Patients of the National Institute of Child Health – San Borja (INSN-SB).
The INSN-SB is a highly specialized pediatric surgical hospital dedicated to the care of children and adolescents referred from various hospitals throughout the country. Its mission is to provide highly complex medical care with a comprehensive and compassionate approach, supported by a team of highly qualified healthcare professionals.
Its modern infrastructure and cutting-edge technology favor the development of academic and training activities, organized by the Institute's units, aimed at strengthening the skills and abilities of students and professionals in training.
- The clinical rotation will take place from January 19 to February 6, 2026.
- The schedule for carrying out activities will be from Monday to Thursday (excluding holidays). 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

A pediatrician and associate member of the Peruvian Society of Pediatrics, she has extensive experience in the comprehensive management of pediatric burn patients. Currently, she works in the Specialized Comprehensive Burn Patient Care Subunit at the National Institute of Child Health – San Borja (INSN-SB), where she actively participates in the clinical care and compassionate support of patients and their families. She also serves as a campus coordinator and professor at the Faculty of Human Medicine of the University of Piura (UDEP). - Dr. Julio Rivera Del Carpio
Medical surgeon, specialist in plastic surgery, member of the Peruvian Society of Plastic Surgery. Attending physician in the Burn and Microsurgery Plastic Surgery Service of the INSN-SB.

The application, selection and acceptance process will take place on the following dates.
- Document and application reception: Until November 17, 2025.
- File evaluation and interviews: From November 18 to 21, 2025.
- Publication of accepted students: November 21, 2025.
- Delivery of commitment to accept the vacancy: Until November 25, 2025.
The receipt of files will be carried out in a virtual until the November 9, 2025, through the online application enabled by the Interinstitutional Relations and Internationalization Unit (UREINI).

The application must include the following mandatory documents:
- Application form for the student mobility program, with the applicant student's data.
- Cover letter, addressed to the Director of the Professional School of Human Medicine, indicating the student's personal data and a brief explanation of the reasons that led him to apply to the Student Mobility Program.
- Curriculum vitae of the applicant, undocumented (maximum 2 pages).
- Academic record or certificate that proves the required cumulative index.
Applicants are responsible for ensuring the truthfulness and authenticity of the data and documents submitted.
Applications submitted after the deadline or that do not meet all the required criteria will not be accepted.
The selection process is the responsibility of the Evaluation Committee, and consists of two phases:
- First phase
Evaluation of the submitted documentation and the qualification of the candidates. - Second phase
Interviews with applicants.
The evaluation considers the student's motivation, academic trajectory, plans during the mobility period, and adaptability to optimize their experience in the program.

- Simple copy of Complete vaccination record, According to the Vaccination Protocol Guidelines of the Faculty of Human Medicine, it must necessarily include complete vaccinations against hepatitis, diphtheria, tetanus, influenza, and COVID-19, according to current regulations.
- Proof of payment.
Students who leave the Student Mobility Program without justification, after being evaluated and accepted, will be excluded without the possibility of participating in future calls, and may be subject to a penalty, depending on the call.
Offenses during the application process or during the validity of student mobility will be sanctioned in accordance with the Regulations of Disciplinary Measures for students of the University of Piura.
