 The rotation

The rotation in the Surgical Emergency Department of the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital offers medical students a key formative experience in their professional development. In this dynamic and demanding environment, students face real-life situations that require immediate clinical assessment, rapid decision-making, and interdisciplinary teamwork, strengthening their technical, ethical, and communication skills.

During the rotation, students apply and integrate their clinical and surgical knowledge in the care of patients with emergency conditions, under the supervision of highly qualified specialist physicians. They also gain a practical understanding of how the healthcare system works, including triage, referral, and counter-referral processes, and the importance of collaborative work in providing timely and safe patient care.

This experience allows the future doctor to develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills and empathy, consolidating a person-centered and service-oriented training in contexts of high healthcare complexity.

 

 Goals
  • Recognizing and assessing the patient in a surgical emergency, applying triage and prioritization criteria according to severity levels. 
  • Apply the initial management of the main acute medical-surgical pathologies, integrating clinical and surgical knowledge in real emergency contexts. 
  • Develop skills for making quick and informed decisions, in coordination with interdisciplinary teams and under ethical and patient safety principles. 
  • Understanding the organization and dynamics of the emergency care system, including the referral, counter-referral processes and effective communication with the patient and their family.

 

Addressed to

Students of the Professional School of Human Medicine who meet the following requirements:

  • Having successfully completed the Surgery I course.
  • Have a cumulative index equal to or greater than 14.
  • Have a valid enrollment in the 2025-II academic period.

Headquarters

The rotation will take place in the Emergency Department of the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital.

Almenara Hospital is a high-complexity public hospital located in the La Victoria district of Lima, and is part of the Social Security Health Insurance (EsSalud) network. It is distinguished by its extensive capacity to resolve medical issues and its pioneering role in the development of specialized medicine in Peru. It boasts a robust infrastructure, nationally recognized clinical and surgical services, and a highly qualified multidisciplinary team.

The Emergency Department provides comprehensive care to adult patients in critical situations, covering medical, surgical and trauma pathologies, and constitutes an ideal training environment for clinical learning, rapid decision making and teamwork in contexts of high healthcare demand.

 

Duration and schedule
  • The clinical rotation will take place from February 2nd to 19th, 2026.
  • The schedule for carrying out activities in the surgical emergency department is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (except holidays), from 8:00 am to 12 pm.

Teachers

Dr. Eduardo Huamán Egoavil

Emergency, Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon.
Coordinator of the Intestinal Failure Unit of EsSalud.

Dr. Huamán is a surgeon with extensive experience in the comprehensive management of critically ill patients and in the care of complex emergencies. He holds a Master of Science degree with a specialization in Pharmacology from the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University (UPCH) and a Master's degree in Health Services Management from the University of San Martín de Porres (USMP).

He has distinguished himself as a professor of Surgery at the Peruvian Union University and the University of Piura, contributing to the clinical and humanistic training of future physicians. His academic and clinical leadership positions him as a leading figure in the field of emergency surgery and critical care in the country.

Dr. Luis Terry Castellano

General Surgeon – Assistant Physician of the Department of Surgery of the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital.

Dr. Terry is a specialist in general surgery, with extensive experience in the care of critically ill surgical patients and in coordinating multidisciplinary teams in highly complex settings. He serves as head of the on-call surgical team at Almenara Hospital, where he leads the management of surgical emergencies and high-demand procedures.

He also teaches at the university level as a visiting professor at the Faculty of Human Medicine of the National University of San Marcos (UNMSM) and the University of San Martín de Porres (USMP), standing out for his commitment to the practical and ethical training of future medical surgeons.

Schedule

The application, selection, and acceptance process will take place on the following dates:

  • Document and application submission deadline: November 17, 2025.
  • File evaluation and interviews: From November 18 to 21, 2025.
  • Publication of accepted students: November 21, 2025.
  • Submission of commitment to accept vacancy: until November 25, 2025.

The receipt of files will be carried out in a virtual up to andNovember 17, 2025, through the online application enabled by the Interinstitutional Relations and Internationalization Unit (UREINI).

The application must include the following mandatory documents:

  • Application form for the student mobility program, with the applicant student's data.
  • Cover letter, addressed to the Director of the Professional School of Human Medicine, indicating the student's personal data and a brief explanation of the reasons that led him to apply to the Student Mobility Program.
  • Curriculum vitae of the applicant, undocumented (maximum 2 pages).
  • Academic record or certificate that proves the required cumulative index.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring the truthfulness and authenticity of the data and documents submitted.

Applications submitted after the deadline or that do not meet all the required criteria will not be accepted.

 

Selection

The selection process is the responsibility of the Evaluation Committee, and consists of two phases:

  • First phase:
    Evaluation of the submitted documentation and the qualification of the candidates.
  • Second phase:
    Interviews with applicants.

The evaluation considers the student's motivation, academic trajectory, plans during the mobility period, and adaptability to optimize their experience in the program.

The results of the call will be communicated through your institutional emails.

 

Acceptance

The accepted student must submit the Commitment to accept vacancy, which must be duly completed and signed within the established deadline. You must also submit the following documents:

  • Simple copy of Valid and current National Identity Document.
  • Simple copy of valid health insurance.
  • Simple copy of Complete vaccination record, According to the Vaccination Protocol Guidelines of the Faculty of Human Medicine, it must necessarily include complete vaccinations against hepatitis, diphtheria, tetanus, influenza, and COVID-19, according to current regulations.
  • Proof of payment.

 

Resignations and sanctions

Students who leave the Student Mobility Program without justification, after being evaluated and accepted, will be excluded without the possibility of participating in future calls, and may be subject to a penalty, depending on the call.

Offenses during the application process or during the validity of student mobility will be sanctioned in accordance with the Regulations of Disciplinary Measures for students of the University of Piura.
