In Peru, around [number] are registered each year 15,000 cases of burned children, of which approximately 130 cases correspond to third-degree and severe burns.
The most common cause of burns in children continues to be contact with hot liquids (70 % of the cases) and the accidents caused by direct fire (13 % in severe cases).
The use of direct fire as a burning agent are higher risk factors, as well as contact with hot liquids inside the home; the highest prevalence is in rural areas.
In the basic training of medical students, contact with severely burned patients, and specifically children, requiring treatment in a specialized burn unit such as the one at INSN-SB, is limited. Therefore, we believe that at INSN-SB, and specifically in the Burn Unit, students will have access to an area that is the leading center for the care of children with severe burns in our country. This will provide them with invaluable experience.
The INSN-SB provides care annually to between 300 and 400 Children with burns requiring hospitalization, from Lima and the interior of the country.
It has a Intensive Care Unit (ICU) specifically for burn victims, where more than 50 % many of the cases require intensive monitoring and specialized support.
Since 2019, it applies Guide for the Management of the Acute Burn Patient, Developed with support from the WHO/PAHO and approved by the Ministry of Health, which allowed for a reduction in mortality to 0 % in 2019
They employ modern techniques such as Meek micrografting, hydrosurgery with the Versajet system, propeller and free flaps, and the use of homografts, xenografts, and dermal matrices to improve the prognosis. Additionally, the INSN-SB has the Tissue Bank and from Elastic Garment Workshop, where compression garments and tights are made free of charge to control scars.
For patients with sequelae, comprehensive treatment includes physical and emotional rehabilitation, Hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, and reconstructive surgery for post-burn contractures.
Students will have the opportunity to become involved in the comprehensive care of patients, discuss real clinical cases, work as a team with professionals from different disciplines, and strengthen their clinical skills in a highly specialized environment.
