Clinical research is a systematic study of human subjects or samples to generate knowledge that enables the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of diseases, as well as the improvement of health. It includes studies such as clinical trials, where new treatments are tested, and observational studies that track the natural progression of diseases.

Specifically in hepatology, research focuses on multicenter studies, case studies, retrospective studies based on data obtained, evaluation of new therapies for liver diseases, investigation of molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases, and innovation in diagnosis and monitoring, such as imaging techniques and liver biopsy.

They are also characterized by collaboration between specialists, attention to complex liver diseases (including transplantation), and the development of instructive clinical observations on unique laboratory and imaging findings.
The Gastroenterology service at the Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital offers diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive system, specializing in liver diseases and a Digestive Hemorrhage Unit.

The Gastroenterology Department at Rebagliati Hospital actively participates in clinical research, as evidenced by its application of innovative technology for early diagnosis, such as endoscopic ultrasound for the detection and biopsy of oncological lesions, and its conducting studies to improve care, such as the diagnostic performance of capsule endoscopy. The hospital itself has been nationally recognized for its high level of scientific research, which supports the work of its various specialties, including gastroenterology.

• To expose the student to the scientific methodology in research and enable them to create a space for the development of clinical research in gastroenterology and hepatology.
• Develop critical thinking skills by learning to analyze scientific literature, interpret statistical results, and assess the validity of evidence.
• To put into practice skills in scientific writing and communication and the preparation of reports, articles and presentations.

• Human medicine students enrolled in the 2026 II semester.
• Cumulative index equal to or greater than 13.
• Having passed the medical clinic course.

• Undergraduate student rotation in a space where they can generate relevant clinical information through the creation of databases (filling, updating and monitoring).
• Information monitoring and filling of local and international databases.
• Possibility of developing research projects based on information from these databases.
• Preparation and publication of clinical case reports, assisting in the preparation, writing and publication of said cases in indexed journals (where you will learn from the part of collecting consent).
• Students will be included in publications resulting from their work in this area, with their respective affiliations. This is in accordance with international authorship standards.

The Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital, formerly the Employee's Hospital, is a Peruvian public hospital located in Lima and administered by EsSalud. It is the most important hospital complex within Peru's social security system.

The department within Rebagliati Hospital that deals with digestive system problems is the Department of Digestive Diseases, which has various specialized services for parts of the digestive system such as the stomach, duodenum, colon, rectum, anus, and pancreas. It has three sub-services, namely:

1. Endoscopy service
2. Clinical Gastroenterology Service
3. Liver service

In addition, it has the Digestive Hemorrhage Unit, focused on the care of emergencies related to digestive bleeding.

• The rotation will take place from January 4th to 29th, 2027.
• The schedule for carrying out activities is from Monday to Friday (except holidays), from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The application, selection, and acceptance process will take place on the following dates:

• Document and application submission deadline: October 23, 2026.
• Evaluation of files and interviews: Until November 6, 2026.
• Publication of accepted students: November 9, 2026.
• Submission of commitment to accept vacancy: Until November 16, 2026.

Applications will be accepted virtually until October 23, 2026 at 13:00 hours, through the online application form provided by the Interinstitutional Relations and Internationalization Unit (UREINI).

The internship will only begin if we have 2 students enrolled and accepted.

The application must include the following mandatory documents:

• Application form for the student mobility program, with the applicant student's data.
• Cover letter, addressed to the Director of the Professional School of Human Medicine, indicating the student's personal data and a brief explanation of the reasons that led him to apply to the Student Mobility Program.
• Curriculum vitae of the applicant, undocumented (maximum 2 pages).
• Academic record or certificate that proves the required cumulative index.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring the truthfulness and authenticity of the data and documents submitted.

Applications submitted after the deadline or that do not meet all the required criteria will not be accepted.

The selection process is the responsibility of the Evaluation Committee, and consists of two phases:

• First phase:

Evaluation of the submitted documentation and the qualification of the candidates.

• Second phase:

Interviews with applicants.

The evaluation considers the student's motivation, academic trajectory, plans during the mobility period, and adaptability to optimize their experience in the program.

The results of the call will be communicated through your institutional emails.

The accepted student must submit the Commitment to accept vacancy, which must be duly completed and signed within the established timeframe.

You must also submit the following documents:

• Health certificate that certifies good physical and mental health.
• Simple copy of Valid and current National Identity Document.
• Simple copy of valid health insurance.
• Simple copy of Complete vaccination record, According to the Vaccination Protocol Guidelines of the Faculty of Human Medicine, it must necessarily include complete vaccinations against hepatitis, diphtheria, tetanus, influenza, and COVID-19, according to current regulations.
• Proof of payment.

Students who leave the Student Mobility Program without justification, after being evaluated and accepted, will be excluded without the possibility of participating in future calls, and may be subject to a penalty, depending on the call.

Offenses during the application process or during the validity of student mobility will be sanctioned in accordance with the Regulations of Disciplinary Measures for students of the University of Piura.
