 The rotation

The Interdisciplinary Internship in Medicine and Bioengineering This is a training rotation that offers medical students an innovative educational experience integrating clinical practice with bioengineering. Through collaborative work with bioengineering students, participants gain exposure to areas such as mechanical ventilation, rehabilitation, and intensive care from a technological perspective applied to healthcare.

The experience strengthens the understanding of how medical technology works in the hospital setting, expands research capabilities, and develops skills for working in multidisciplinary teams.

This activity prepares future doctors for the challenges of modern medicine, where interdisciplinary collaboration is key to quality care.

 Goals
  • To foster interdisciplinary collaboration between medical and biomedical engineering students for the development of innovative technological solutions that address real clinical needs.
  • To train engineering students in the identification of clinical needs in highly complex areas.
  • To raise awareness among medical students about the importance and potential of biomedical technology in their practice.
  • Integrate clinical and engineering knowledge for problem solving.
  • Develop a viable and applicable technological improvement proposal as the final result of the course.

Addressed to

Students of the Professional School of Human Medicine who meet the following requirements:

  • Having successfully completed the third year of studies.
  • Have a cumulative index equal to or greater than 14.
  • Have a valid enrollment in the 2025-II academic period.

Benefits
  • Alignment with the current biomedical environment: It strengthens the understanding of the interdisciplinary work demanded by the medical device industry and health systems.
  • Practical learning in real-world contexts: It brings the student closer to clinical environments and the use of technologies applied to healthcare.
  • Boosting innovation: promotes the generation of ideas and projects based on joint work between medicine and engineering.
  • Certificate of participation, awarded by the Faculty of Human Medicine of the University of Piura, which accredits the training experience.

Modality
  • In person

Headquarters

The rotation will be developed in an articulated manner in both institutions, combining academic activities both in the classrooms of the University of Piura (UDEP) and in the classrooms of the University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC), which will allow students to take advantage of complementary strengths in clinical and technological training.

Additionally, a supervised clinical visit is planned at the National Institute of Child Health – San Borja, specifically in the Intensive Care Unit and burn rehabilitation areas. This experience will allow participants to observe the real-world application of medical technologies and rehabilitation strategies in a specialized hospital setting, strengthening the integration between clinical knowledge and the engineering approach addressed during the rotation.
