The Department of Basic Sciences, Bioethics, and Human Life is responsible for the general studies, which constitute the introductory core to the humanistic and scientific knowledge of the Bachelor of Science in Medicine. To this end, they offer a comprehensive overview of the major humanistic and scientific disciplines—philosophy, history, theology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology—with an emphasis on physics, chemistry, and biology due to their preparatory value in medical science.

Its purpose is to help medical students broaden their knowledge and critical thinking skills, acquire a solid repertoire of sound and practical convictions in their respective fields, develop habits of continuous study, and hone their intellectual abilities: to think with scientific rigor and communicate their ideas accurately and clearly. Furthermore, it aims to foster university-level cultural competence, the foundation of scientific and professional competence, thus preventing, for the benefit of the patient, the distortion of a teaching approach with a strong professional bias.

In addition, the Department organizes courses for the continuing education of its teachers as well as outreach activities to the community.
