Polo Legacy
Leonardo Polo Barrena, one of the most renowned philosophers of recent times, maintained a very close academic link with the University of Piura, which he visited in European summers for 17 years since 1983, leaving behind a significant school during that time. His valuable work is a subject of research not only for the teachers of the Philosophy department, but also for both undergraduate and graduate students from the different academic faculties.
In the present era of knowledge and globalization, thanks to his work the two great challenges of every university can be tackled; firstly, the interdisciplinarity between the different scientific fields since in his Theory of Knowledge (initially about two thousand pages) he discovers the status of each of the different sciences, contributing to interdisciplinary work both in the themes and in the different methods; and secondly, the urgent personalization and humanization of human life in the field of social sciences. Hence, the Polo Complete Works project (about thirty volumes so far) is promoted by researchers from the University of Malaga, the University of La Sabana, the La Santa Cruz University of Rome, the University of Navarra and from the University of Piura.

Migrations on the North Coast of Peru. 16th-20th centuries
Immigration to our territory is a phenomenon that has occurred since the time of the conquest, with the first two groups to arrive in these lands being the Spanish and the Africans. Although, for other purposes, other European groups (English, Italians and Germans) and Asians (Chinese and Japanese) continued to arrive during the Republican era.
The objective of this project is to analyze four of the most important immigrations that occurred from the 16th to the 20th century: Spanish, African, English and Chinese; mainly, to the northern coast of the current Peruvian territory, and for this, we focus on the contributions that each of them brought with them, making the racial and cultural scenario of Peruvian society more complex.
First Spanish foundation in Peru (16th century): Piura la Vieja
The archaeological, architectural and historical studies carried out through three excavation campaigns from 1999 to the present have allowed us to get to know the old checkerboard urban layout of what was the first Spanish city in Peru in the 16th century, and which was settled on a series of pre-Inca and Inca layouts and roads. Studying this area has allowed the University of Piura and, in particular, the Faculty of Humanities to become part of the Ibero-American Research Network on Colonial Urbanism. Without a doubt, it is advisable to study the area of Piura la Vieja not only as a historical monument, but, above all, the political, economic and social relations that were established in said area.
It is worth highlighting that, based on a heritage asset such as Piura la Vieja, a proposal for the comprehensive development of the area (tourism, economic, social) can be proposed that would benefit the residents settled in the hamlets of Piura la Vieja. San José del Chorro, La Bocana, Pabur Viejo and Monterrico, areas that currently have deficiencies in basic services.
The history of Piura
In recent years, interest in regional history has been growing, for this reason it has been considered appropriate to review the 2004 publication, History of Piura, prepared by a group of professors, and, from there, continue investigating, but with an interdisciplinary thematic structure that includes different aspects, and that offers a more complete vision of our region, in the three great historical periods: pre-Hispanic, viceroyalty and republic.
By 2024, it is planned to publish a book that will collect the latest research, but following a thematic structure based on aspects such as political, social, economic, religious, cultural, territorial and population.
Bicentennial Project 2011-2024
The Institute of Humanistic Studies has thought it appropriate to carry out this project, because it considers that the bicentennial is an important opportunity to reflect, from the humanities, not only on what happened in our country, but, above all, because it will allow us to discover what we are now and deepen the sense of our identity as an independent and sovereign country.
A series of activities and publications have been scheduled that will be carried out periodically:

2012 Towards the bicentennial of the independence of Peru: the Napoleonic invasion and the courts of Cádiz in the Peruvian viceroyalty (1808-1814)
